Sunday School Teacher

This Sunday, Mark and I got the chance to be Sunday School teachers!  Well, I did the "teaching" and Mark ran damage control.  It was so much fun!  I taught in Lauren's class and was a teacher to 11 three year olds.  We had 4 high school student-helpers, and Ben came with us, also.  Besides one little boy getting a bloody lip from tripping on the rug, it went pretty well!  We made birthday invitations (for Jesus' birthday party :)), read the story of Christmas (okay, I read and they listened for about 30 seconds), played with toys, and finished with some goldfish and water.  The best quote of the morning came from Lauren:  "I'm not afraid of God anymore," she said.  I told her that was good...?

It took me back to my childhood, growing up in church and attending Sunday School.  Church was a big part of my life when I was a kid, and I am so thankful that my parents gave me a good Christian foundation to live my life on.  It always meant so much to me that as a child and young adult, whenever I had a question about God, my parents could always give me an answer that was Biblically based.  As an adult, it's nice to know that I belong to such an awesome church (Christ's Church at Mason) that gives that same spiritual guidance.  We have been members for almost 6 years, and I have learned so much about the Bible and met some incredible people during this time.

I hope you will spend some time in the next couple of weeks focusing on the reason we celebrate Christmas, and give thanks to God for the blessings you have in your life.  One of the most precious blessings I give thanks for is that I  live in a country where I am free to teach a class full of children about the birth of Jesus Christ.  And I am so thankful that I have such a wonderful place to do it!  Thanks CCM!

Our Week

I usually have Fridays off, but I switched and had Monday off, instead.  I had a great day on Monday hanging with my girl.  The house was clean and I was pretty unmotivated to do anything but play and relax.  We had some Barbie time, we had a tea party, we painted some potails, we watched some TV - all in all, it was pretty awesome!

Then...it was time to go to the doctor for her 3 year check up.  She started to panic, but I informed her that I didn't think she would need any shots.  Much to our dismay, she needed one.  She got upset, but not near as upset as when he looked in her ears!  After having repeat ear infections and tubes, she is completely freaked out by anyone touching her ears.  Here are her stats:

  • Weight:  32lbs
  • Height:  37 inches
  • Percentile:  60% for weight, 40% for height
at the doctor, after her shot!
The doctor said she is doing great!  She is potty-trained (except at bedtime), she's talking well, and is learning more and more each day.  She is constantly asking me when she can go to school now that she's "a big girl."  I keep telling her to quit rushing me!  I need some time to take in all this cute 3 year old behavior, 'cause I know what lies around the corner.

On Thursday, Mark traveled to Columbus to act in a commercial for an attorney's office.  He had to get up at 5:00am to drive there and be on set by 8:30.  If you know Mark, he is not a morning person.  He isn't mean or grumpy, he just simply won't get out of bed!  When it comes to acting or directing, however, he bounces out of bed with glee.  I remember when he was shooting a film called 13 Floors during the Summer of 2007.  He was getting up at 6:30 in the morning and coming to bed between 3:30 and 4:00 the next morning; not once did he complain.  He loved it!  It's nice to see him so happy, doing something he enjoys so much.

This commercial was shot at a production company that has all the bells and whistles.  He even had his own dressing area!  He met the attorney, who told Mark that he was chosen out of 215 people to act in the commercial.  He had a great time and is very excited about the increase in acting opportunities that he has had recently.  Hopefully there are more to come in 2011!

Bengals Game

On Sunday, I was fortunate enough to spend the day with my cousin, Jeremy, at the Bengals vs. Saints game at Paul Brown Stadium.  We had awesome seats in the "Club West" section.  It was only 30 degrees outside, but I was pretty comfortable throughout the entire game!  The Bengals lost (of course), but they did keep it interesting.  The final score was 34-30.

It honestly didn't matter to me whether they won or lost because I was so happy to spend some time with Jeremy.  We grew up in the same neighborhood so we had more of a brother/sister relationship.  He was always the one beating up on me, throwing beetle-covered tennis balls at my head in a pool, making fun of me, telling potential boyfriends that I had never kissed a boy (I hadn't-but they didn't need to know that!), or my favorite, closing the door to his house when he saw me walking towards it!  Yes, Jeremy was quite the brother...but as we got older, he became one of my best friends.  We have a lot of fun memories together-one of my favorites was "Cousins Christmas" at my sister's house.  All of the cousins got together and watched home movies of Christmas, made fun of our parents (okay, mostly Uncle Terry wearing spandex) and laughed until we cried.

Our family gets together a lot, but now that most of us have children, it's really hard to get to talk in complete sentences!  There have been gatherings where I've barely spoken to some of the people that were a huge part of my childhood.  That's why I am thankful to have gotten a piece of it back, yesterday.  Jeremy is still so much fun to be around.  He is smart, a great listener, and he always makes me laugh.  I love you, Jer!

First Snowfall

This weekend was our first taste of winter-we got our first snowfall of the season!
I was awoken on Saturday morning at 7:45 by Ben, dressed in a snow suit & boots, repeating over & over, "Mommy...you've GOT to look outside!  You're gonna be surprised!!!"  He was right, I was surprised.  We had maybe 1 inch of snow on the ground.  Even though I was annoyed that he kept waking me up every 10 minutes for a weather report, I came to a realization:  it's nice to have kids around to point out the simple joys in life.  Too often as adults, we tend to look at the negatives of everything instead of remembering the pure joy of watching snow fall and being able to play outside in it.  Not once did they say, "I'm too cold" or "All this sled-riding is wearing me out!"  Those thoughts are reserved for the minds of adults.

Here are some pics of our snowy fun!

it's not a big hill, but it works!

Thanksgiving Weekend

Whew!  This was a looong, productive, and relaxing weekend for me!

I have been off work since Wednesday, and have gotten to spend 5 days with the kids.  My biggest concern going into this long weekend was that I would spend the entire time reprimanding them (sounds much better than yelling 'til I'm hoarse).  The weekend ended up being good; I definitely did my share of "reprimanding."  The favorite activity seemed to be running laps around our first floor, Ben pursuing Lauren, in a high speed chase over toys, food, blankets, etc.  After many reminders, falls, "time-outs," and swats on the butt...the kids are still running laps around the house.  Ahhh, children.  One humbling experience after another!

For the last seven years (except the year I gave birth to Lauren), Mark and I have hosted Thanksgiving dinner at our house.  It begins with prep night on Wednesday night.  My parents and sister come over to help prepare the turkey, peel & cut potatoes, set up tables & chairs, etc.  We listen to Christmas music and spend some time catching up with each other.  It's one of my favorite things about having Thanksgiving dinner at my house!  Unfortunately, Heather couldn't make it this year, but we still had a good time.
The first year we hosted Thanksgiving dinner, we had 24 people; this year we had 17.  Although we couldn't play our traditional flag football game due to the weather, we had a great time eating, laughing, and being thankful for all the blessings in our lives.  We know that every blessing we have is a gift from God, and for this we give thanks!
The "Old Folks" Table - LOL!

The Haggard Parents Table (notice all the wine?)

The Kids Table
Once the Thanksgiving festivities were over, it was time to get the house decorated for Christmas!  The kids were really excited for it this year, which makes it even more fun.  I put up the decorations on Friday night and the tree went up on Saturday.
Mooky was a big help, as usual

Best toy in the world-empty box!

All finished!
After being home for 4 days and nights, the kids were going stir-crazy!  We decided to go to Sharon Woods Holiday in Lights to let them play, see Santa Claus, and see some Christmas lights.  It turned out to be a great idea!

I love seeing them have so much fun!

the lights were really cute!

Aww!  How lucky I am...
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Date Night

Last night Mark and I went out for a date night.  I always thought that sounded so stupid when I would hear people refer to going out with their spouse as a "date."  Now that I've been married for 11 years and have 2 children, I completely get it!  When we first met, we would go eat, go to a movie, hang out at a bowling alley, etc. just to be around each other, to get to know each other.  Even after all this time, we still have to "date" to keep knowing each other!  It's amazing how 2 people can live in the same house, sleep in the same bed, eat dinner together every night, and tell each other "I love you" every day and not be connected, but that's the way life is.  Work, kids, hobbies, even exercise takes a lot of our attention away from each other week in and week out.  It's important for me to know that we are still in love and still WANT to be around each other.

So, we have date nights.  All we did was go to Outback for dinner and then went to Target to look at toy ideas for the kids' Christmas gifts.  We had each other's full attention for the first time in a long time.  We caught up on what's going on in our lives and told stories about the kids.  We laughed, we discussed our future family plans (another baby or not?), we just enjoyed being around each other.  That's what I always wanted out of marriage, being around someone I enjoy for the rest of my life.  I'm so lucky to have found that person!

Mark, you are my best friend, my encourager, my support system, my partner in raising our kids, and my personal stand-up comedian.  Thanks for hangin' with me for the past 17 years!  We've had a lot of good times, but somehow I know the best times lie ahead.  I love you!

Happy Birthday LJ!

Dear Lauren,

Today is your 3rd birthday!  You were born @ 12:30am on Saturday, November 17, 2007.  You weighed 7lbs 6oz and were 20 1/2" long.  You were born a little before your due date because you were due to be born the day before Thanksgiving, and no one wanted to be in a hospital on Thanksgiving!  Mommy went to the hospital to be induced at 11:00am on November 16th, and you were born about 13 hours later!  You were easy on Mommy AND didn't pull any umbilical cord stunts like your brother!

I was so excited to have a daughter!  I was dreaming of all the fun things we will do together in our lifetime.

When you were born, you looked like this:
To put it mildly, you were NOT HAPPY!  Apparently, you were pretty comfy in Mommy's belly!  The first thing I noticed when I saw your face was your lips.  I knew that you had gotten those from me...

We took you home and began to get to know you.  You were a lot like your brother at first; you didn't like to sleep at night and you drank A LOT of formula.  We got used to having a baby in the house again, since we hadn't had a newborn in 5 1/2 years!
look at those cheeks!
You were growing and doing well, and all of a sudden @ 8 weeks old, you got sick.  Mommy wasn't sure what was wrong, but I felt like I shouldn't panic, because I was "experienced."  You had a fever, you were breathing hard, and would only sleep in your car seat that night.  I called the pediatrician's office first thing in the morning and got an appointment.  I wasn't too worried, I just thought you had a little bug.  Much to my surprise, the Dr. told me that he thought you needed to go to Children's Hospital!  Mommy began to panic, then...

I picked up your brother from preschool and called your Daddy.  We sent Ben to Mamaw & Papaw Miller's house and headed down to Children's Hospital.  You were admitted right away to the ER, and then they moved us to ICU.  I was REALLY worried when the doors opened to the ICU and 7 people were standing there in gowns and masks waiting for you.  They took you out of my arms and began hooking you up to machines.  You were crying really hard, and so was Mommy!  Daddy and I were really worried that you might not come home again...
Ben made you a Get Well card for your crib
You were diagnosed with bronchiolitis and RSV.  You had to stay on oxygen and have your nose suctioned out every hour for 24 hours.  You HATED the suction; Mommy and Daddy hated seeing you so upset.  We prayed and prayed to God to work through the doctors and nurses to heal you.  We slept in bed with you every night, and only left your side to spend some time with Benny when he came to visit with Mamaw & Papaw.  Finally, you started to get better!!!!  You were there for 4 days and it is safe to say, those were the scariest 4 days of Mommy & Daddy's lives!  Every February 4th, I thank God for healing you and letting us have the joy of raising you.

You have continued to grow and show your personality more and more each day.

We love seeing the differences between you and Ben.  You love fruits and vegetables, you are a little quieter (not much) than Ben, you are more cautious around people that you don't know, you love to listen to stories at bedtime, and you love to cuddle with Mommy & Daddy.  You say all the time, "I like you, Mommy."  You love to be the boss and give instructions.  You love to watch Max & Ruby, have your toenails (you call them "potails") painted, go on bike rides, play at the park, and you love to make us laugh.  You are a lot like your brother in that way!

The most fun thing about you is seeing how much you love your brother.  You two became best friends early on.  Ben was so sweet with you and loved to help me with you when you were a baby.  You are still best buds, even though you get on each other's nerves sometimes.
On your 3rd birthday, I just want you to know how much we love you!  You have made our family so special, just by being you.  You are funny, sweet, and usually a joy to be around (although sometimes when you're tired or hungry you can be a total grump!).  You are starting to get an attitude, and right now, Mommy thinks it's really funny.  I'm sure it won't be so funny very soon...

Here are some pictures of your 3rd birthday party.  It was a lot of fun!

Happy Birthday, Lauren!

New Hair, New Clothes, New Age

This past weekend was busy!

Friday began my "day of makeover," beginning with my hair.  I had wanted to cut my hair short for about 6 months, but wanted to wait until my face wasn't as round.  I held off until the end of the challenge so that I could grow it as long as possible in order to donate my hair to Locks of Love.  I ended up getting about 12" cut off total; I am really happy with the cut!  I added some highlights and color, but the hairstylist put a little too much red (I'm talking Ronald McDonald red) coloring in.  She said that I could go back for her to correct it if I didn't like it-I'm going back on Friday!
Ta Da!  Here's the new 'do!

Afterwards, I went shopping with my mom to buy some new clothes!  I was super-excited because I NEVER buy myself new clothes.  Money seems to always be an issue, but I wasn't too excited trying on clothes in the size that I used to be, either.  It was a lot of fun putting on pants and shirts 3 sizes smaller THAT FIT!  I could even wear an XL in the "normal people size" section!  I thought to myself, "If I'm this happy in the size I'm in now, how happy will I be when I reach my goal weight?!"  I had an outfit in mind that I wanted:  a long sweater over leggings or jeggings (jean leggings), with knee-high boots.  It took me until Sunday evening to find it, but I finally found it at Avenue.  Woo Hoo!  I will post of pic of me in it soon!

On Saturday, we went to Ben's final flag football game.  He scored another touchdown!  It was so exciting-he's scored 4 touchdowns this year, and I was there for every one of them, luckily!  My work schedule kept me from going to about half of his games, which was a HUGE struggle for me.  His team didn't win a lot of games, but they gave it their all!

Later that evening, we met up with my family at our favorite restaurant, Outback, for Mark & I's birthday dinner.  Our dinner party was even better because my Aunt Karen was here from Mt. Vernon, OH to visit with my cousin (her son) Josh, his wife, Heather, and their adorable daughter, Beatrix from Lexington, KY (they met in the middle).  It was delicious, as usual!  We had 10 people at one table, so it was loud & chaotic.  I always feel sorry for anyone who isn't used to eating dinner with us (in this case, my Aunt Jessie & Uncle Larry) because they always have this exhausted look on their face by the end of the meal.  It makes me realize how used to noise and interruption I am...

There was a woman making balloon animals for the kids.  It always seems like a cute idea until the kids start fighting over them and knocking things over!

After dinner, we came back to our house for some cake & ice cream.  Mark turned 34 and I turned 32.  It's tradition in our family that you get your favorite kind of cake for your birthday.  My favorite is spice cake with cream cheese icing and Mark's is chocolate with chocolate icing.  Mmmm...

My Weight Loss Journey: From Really Fat to Less Fat

pumpkin patch-1 year ago
pumpkin patch-this year

The Journey
It all started in February of 2010, at my uncle's birthday party.  I remember being in such a bad mood, doing nothing but complaining about everything from money woes to being fat.  Unfortunately for her, my cousin-in-law, Trish was lucky enough to be sitting next to me taking it all in.  I remember her saying, "Geez, Kel...you've got a lot going on..." with an empathetic look on her face.  She was probably thinking, "Someone kill her and put her out of her misery!"

The problem: I was so unhappy with who I was, how I looked, and how I felt because of my weight.  More than that, it bothered me that other women seemed to have it "all together."  You see, Trish and I have a lot in common.  She is a working mother, has 2 kids, and is on a budget.  What irritated me (because it pointed out my failure!) is that she had figured out how to lose all of her baby weight (from each baby) pretty quickly after delivery-instead of making excuses for 10 years, like me.  And no, she is not one of those people who doesn't have to do anything to lose weight-she had to work her butt off!

The next day at church, I was sitting at a table eating doughnuts with my parents.  Yes, my church serves Krispy Kreme doughnuts every Sunday, and for a person who loves doughnuts & is on diet, it's as if Satan himself is serving them!  But I digress...  I don't remember if it was my Mom or Dad who broached the subject of weight, but it was basically:  "We've got to do something.  I was sitting there looking at all of us last night (at my uncle's party), and we all look like crap (I'm paraphrasing)."  I knew they were right, but also knew that I had pretty much resolved myself to being a fat slob for the rest of my life.  I had lost weight before I had Ben, but had done nothing but gain weight for the past decade.  I had tried several times to lose weight and exercise, but I never stuck with it.  After a while, I had pretty much given up.  I told myself I couldn't do it, I had no willpower, this is just the way I was going to look & feel.

The Challenge Begins
My parents decided to start "The Miller Challenge."  Basically, it was a weight loss challenge for my mom, dad, sister, and me.  The rules:  lose 50lbs in 6 months, get $500.  There it was, the solution to all of my complaining-getting money for not being fat!  We started a blog where we could check in and confidentially keep track of our weight once a week.

At first, I did horrible.  I felt pressured to do it because everyone else seemed so into it, but deep down, I didn't want to.  I was so sure I would fail before I even got started.  I had nothing but excuses: "It costs too much to eat healthy," or "I have no time to exercise," were my favorites.  Finally, I decided to take the advice of a friend and try a program called, "Body-For-Life."
Here's the basics:
  • For six days,
  1. Eat lean protein sources, veges, fruits, and whole grain breads & pastas-ONLY
  2. Do 20 minutes of increasing intensity cardio 3 days
  3. Alternate between upper & lower body weight training the other 3 days
  • On the seventh day, eat whatever you want, as much as you want and do no exercise
The program is designed to make you lose 25lbs in 12 weeks.  I lost 26lbs in 12 weeks.  I have continued with the program and as of today (the end of the Miller Challenge), I have said, "Good riddance" to 44lbs!
Has it been easy?  HECK NO!  The eating portion was difficult at first, but knowing I have one day a week to eat what I have been craving helps me stay focused the other 6 days.  I've been able to keep up with it successfully because I can change the "free day" to any day of the week.  This will help me stay on program during the holidays and not feel like I'm left out.

What has been most surprising to me is that exercising has been the hardest, yet most rewarding portion of the program.  I have pushed myself harder than I have ever pushed myself before.  I started out doing the cardio workouts on a Gazelle-type machine, went to jogging outside, and am now doing a 2.7 mile bike ride (with a lot of inclines!) around my neighborhood.  In order to spend time with the kids every day, I have done morning workouts at 5:15, and I have done late night workouts at 11:00.  My late night bike rides are my favorite.  It's completely dark in our neighborhood, no street lights, no sidewalks for a lot of the ride.  It's absolutely beautiful when the moon is out on a clear night.  It's very quiet and peaceful, although sometimes, the wind blowing a leaf down the road sounds like someone is chasing me!  I've had a dog chase me, two deer freak out and run alongside of me, a skunk crawl out of the sewer right next to me, and 3 or 4 cats run across my path, but what good is it if I don't have a little excitement?

What I've Learned
1) Let's face it, people don't respect fat people.  Unlike other addictions, you can take one look at a fat person and see where their fault lies.  We assume they are lazy and have no self-respect.  As someone who's been there, I can honestly say, they're right!  I had become so lazy that even the simple things became too much for me.  I was less of a mom, a wife, and an employee because of my laziness.

2)  It's not a bunch of hogwash, exercise really does give you more energy!  I started out wondering how I was going to fit in the time to devote to exercise, but it's actually given me more time in the day.  Because I have more energy, the time I used to spend sitting on the couch at night (snacking, of course)  is now spent either cleaning, preparing for the next day, or blogging!  I require less sleep to feel rested than I used to, also.

3)  You need God's help & guidance, ask Him to help you.  I give all the glory to God for my success.  I found strength and willpower to stick with this program only because He was gracious enough to give it to me.  I continually pray for His guidance as I work on losing the remaining 36-56lbs.  I know I can't do it without Him!

4)  You need your family's support.  The Miller Challenge was a huge motivator for me, but I never would have made it this far without Mark's help.  He has been my "spotter" during weight lifting, my conscience when I wanted to "cheat," and most of all, my encourager week in and week out.  He swears he notices every pound I lose and makes comments all the time about how good I look.  The weird thing is, it's hard to hear those things after 10 years of making fun of myself for being fat-I don't believe him.  I've actually been scolded by Mark to quit making fun of myself now because I'm not that person anymore.  I guess he's right, but I won't feel worthy until I am at my goal weight!

Ben has been really sweet, also.  He knows when my cheat day is and we share something decadent on that day.  He likes to watch me workout, and asks me how much weight I've lost often.  He says, "Good job, Mommy!"  In fact, one of the milestones this summer was that I could actually fit in the seat on The Racer at Kings Island.  Sad isn't it?  I was too fat to ride a roller coaster and my 8 year old son couldn't have been prouder when I fit in the seat.  He's going to need a lot of therapy later on..

5)  I have saved a TON of money by eating healthy.  I never go out to lunch anymore, because I'm so limited in what I can eat (fast food restaurants aren't full of lean meats & veges), so I pack my lunch every day.  I thought I was going to have to buy a bunch of separate food for me, but I've now began feeding everyone lean beef, whole wheat pasta, etc. and they love it.  Now, the whole family is eating healthier!

Well, I've almost written a book on weight loss, but oh well.  It's MY blog and I'm proud of myself, dang it!  I'll keep you posted on my progress!  I received my payout from the Miller Challenge tonight and there are a lot of plans for a makeover this weekend!  What an awesome birthday gift to myself, being healthy!

My Day Off

Today, I had a nice day off work to spend with the kids.  I made a pledge to myself that I would not spend it cleaning and yelling, "STOP RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSE!!"

We went to Sharon Woods for a couple hours and soaked up some crisp autumn air and beautiful scenery.  Here are some pics:

I love those little faces!
On days like today, as I sit outdoors looking up at the bright blue sky and the beautiful fall colors on the trees, I wonder how anyone can deny the existence of God, our Creator.  Just think, if this beautiful day is produced from a dying earth, what will an eternal heaven be like?
